Abstract

Purpose: The present study aimed to assess the level of public AI literacy as a dimension of multilateral literacy and to examine generational differences among citizens of Tehran.
Methodology: This research employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. The statistical population consisted of citizens of Tehran, from whom 507 participants were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling based on generational classification. Data were collected using an AI literacy questionnaire and analyzed using correlation tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Findings: The findings indicated that the mean scores of all four components of AI literacy were significantly higher than the theoretical median of the scale. generational differences showed a significant effect on perceived AI literacy, with younger generations obtaining higher mean scores in most dimensions of AI literacy compared to older generations. Furthermore, the pattern of using AI chatbots as emerging tools for accessing information and knowledge differed across generations, with higher usage reported among individuals under the age of 30.
Conclusion:Generational differences play an important role in shaping AI literacy and patterns of using AI-based knowledge resources. Educational programs aimed at improving knowledge and information literacy in the age of artificial intelligence should be designed with consideration of generational characteristics.
Value: This study is the first in Iran to empirically examine generational differences in perceived AI literacy and demonstrated that this gap, The difference in component patterns indicates that this gap is qualitative in nature and stems from different sources of self-efficacy and challenges the assumption of younger generations’ superiority.
